Mopanshan Formation

Mopanshan Fm

Period:
Carboniferous

Age Interval:
C2 (12), Late Carboniferous

Province:
Jilin

Type Locality and Naming

The type section lies at Mopanshan (Mt.), 3 km north of Panshi County Seat, Jilin. It was named by the Changchun College of Geology and Jilin Party of Regional Geological Survey in 1961.

Lithology and Thickness

Siliceous Limestone. A formation of chert-nodule limestone, occasionally intercalated with clastic rock. At Mopanshan, the Lower and Upper parts are composed of gray or dark-gray chert-nodule limestone; the Middle part, of pure and light-gray thick-bedded limestone, with feldspar-rich sandstone-shale interbedded clastic rock at bottom. In the Wangjiajie section of Huangyu Township, the Lower part is dominated by light-gray thick-bedded compact massive crystalline limestone intercalated with chert-nodule limestone; the Upper part is dominated by light-gray pure limestone, compact massive limestone and black chert nodule-bearing limestone intercalated with crystalline limestone; 650−873 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Siliceous limestone

Fossils

In the Wangjiajie section, the Lower part yields fusulinids Eostaffella minuta, E. cf. acuta, Pseudostaffella cf. khotunensis, Profusulinella sp., P. brevissima, Ozawainella sp., etc.; and the Upper part yields Fusulinids Profusulinella prisca, P. rhombiformis var. nibelensis, Eofusulina triangulata, Aljutovella tikhonovichi, Fusulina cf. entecedens, Fusulina subdistenta, Fusulinella cf. provecta, F. cf. bocki, Fusiella typica, Pseudostaffella paradoxa, P. subquadrata, Ozawainella turgida, etc. The fusulinids consist of three assemblages, i.e. the Fusulina-Fusulinella, Profusulinella-Eofusulina and Eostaffella-Pseudostaffella assemblages.
